I had a similar thought recently. Instead of ignoring politics, what if people who want to be politically engaged were to focus on just a few issues (preferably local ones like zoning that get drowned out by national politics and culture-warring) and then take a more humble, moderate stance on everything else? Seems to me like that would be a big improvement.

I think this is right. I have a follow up post this week where I mention local focus or very targeted activism. I have my own set of rules, but I definitely think being issue-oriented and targeted on those issues is perhaps the only safe way to engage at this point. Anything broader and you almost can't help but get sucked into the ideological/partisan tribalism that's so troubling.
